Laser Hair Removal Treatment Guidelines
Before Treatment
- You MUST avoid plucking, waxing, bleaching or using depilatory creams 6 weeks prior to your first treatment and at all times during the course.
- If you have a history of cold sores, Zovirax may be used prior to treatment and continued after treatment.
- TANNED SKIN CANNOT be treated. If tanned, you could get hypo-pigmentation (white spots) and this may not clear for 2-3 months, and may even be permanent. Also the use of tanning products should be discontinued one week before treatment.
- Please ensure you shave the area on the day of, or day before, treatment.
During Treatment
- The skin is cleaned.
- When treating the upper lip and chin, the teeth may be protected with gauze. The gauze also serves to support the lip during treatment allowing a surface to push against.
- With the 810nm wavelength laser, the skin colouring can compete as a target with melanin in the hair. The laser’s cooling tip will be used to minimize skin damage.
- Safety considerations are very important during the laser hair removal procedure. Protective eye wear will be worn by the client and the operator during the procedure.
Aftercare
- Immediately after treatment there may be some redness and swelling at the treatment area. This can feel like mild sunburn.
- The application of iced water during the first few hours after treatment will help reduce any discomfort.
- The application of aloe vera gel can also be used at home.
- Make-up may be used immediately after the treatment, unless there is skin blistering.
- Avoid the sun to reduce the chance of hyper-pigmentation (darkening of the skin). Use sunscreen SPF 30 or greater at all times throughout the course of treatment. You can take vitamin D3 supplements during this time, as this vitamin is produced by the action of sunlight on the skin and which will be blocked by the sunscreen.
- Avoid picking or scratching the area of treated skin.
- Do not use any other hair removal treatment methods (waxing, electrolysis or tweezing) that will disturb hair follicles within the treatment area for 4-6 weeks after treatment. Shaving may be used as a form of hair removal.
- Hair growth occurs at different rates in different areas of the body. New hair growth will not occur for AT LEAST three weeks after treatment.
- Anywhere from 5-19 days after treatment, shedding of the surface hair may occur and this appears as new hair growth. This is NOT new hair growth and will wipe away with a cloth or loofah sponge.
- After the underarms are treated, use a powder instead of a deodorant for the first 24 hours to reduce skin irritation.
- Avoid hot baths and heat treatments. Treat the skin gently as if you had sunburn for 24 hours.
